Okay, Renfrewshire’s not huge—just 176K folk—but we have some amazing musical talent here. For Bandcamp Friday, we have three very different ear treats from LeisureLand, Linzi Clark and Outi Karhu. They are all distinct, although two of them don’t even have their tunes on Bandcamp… but never let the facts get in the way of a good concept! And this month you can hear them all live. We are lucky people.
LeisureLand: “Freddy Krueger”
“Freddy Krueger” by Leisureland starts gently, builds, and then… it drops! That threw me; I wasn’t expecting it … it’s an emotional rollercoaster.
LeisureLand, known for their amazing, energetic performances; banging tunes, sing along choruses … the crowd loves them, and the feeling is mutual. I was slightly thrown by this track … was expecting high energy … the teaser video clips hint at some kind of faux horror—Freddy Krueger unable to cope with the real world, a drunk looking for cigarette butts—maybe something comic. But in the tune, Freddy is an alter ego, the physical embodiment of a soul … so horrible that he can’t be loved or see him self being loved.
It’s a sad, big, powerful song. It knocks on the door of “Creep” and runs away. Nice one, Leisureland!

Linzi Clark: “Crazy” (Cover)
“Crazy” is a cover sung by Linzi Clark. The version by Patsy Cline (written by Willie Nelson!) is one of Linzi’s mum’s favourites. Sadly, the song has been drunkenly dragged through multiple karaoke bars throughout the years, but with Linzi’s amazing voice and Bovine’s beautiful production, we get back to the tragic core of the song.

Outi Karhu: “River”
“River” is the latest single from Outi Karhu’s upcoming album, Let The Light In due out in full 20th Nov. There are hints of Joni Mitchell; you can hear Outi’s jazz and Finnish roots weaving together beautifully. It jumps around but holds together, a bit like the titular River.
It feels like it has dropped out of a musical and plays like a lullaby for adults—it’s stunning.
