Renfrewshire based Mortar Projects celebrated our 4th official womxn’s paint jam, now called ‘Bird’s Jam’. Who are over the moon to have had 16 artists come from all over Scotland: Dundee, Aberdeen, Elgin, Renfrew, Paisley, Glasgow & Falkirk.
Bird’s Jam is created and led by Cheryl Galbraith @cherylgalbraith.art & Philippa Tomlin @hysterious_ who are artists resident in Paisley and lead an Artists Collective called Mortar Projects with PSA.
We provide opportunities for women artists to get out & paint, develop skills and to showcase their talent. Through this, we are developing a supportive community of artists with the opportunity to skill-share and explore future collaborations.
These gatherings are designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment where women can come together and paint without the concerns of getting hassle for painting on the streets. This is just the start – there will be more Bird’s Jams coming up in 2025 and other opportunities to follow. Plus, more from Mortar Projects as a whole!
We are so proud of the small steps we are taking to grow our network, and we are lucky to be building a bird family:

We think what we are doing is unique in Scotland, especially given the amazing support of our residence in Westway. Big thank you to them for providing our spaces. We’d love to hear from more initiatives and collectives and are very open to collaboration and partnership working!
