Spotlight: Ally Wallace

An exhibition of drawing, sculpture and video by Glasgow based artist Ally Wallace.

Thursday 21st November 2024, 4-6pm.
Unit 23, The Paisley Centre, 23 High Street, Paisley, PA1 2AF

As Creative Renfrewshire launches Renfrewshire’s newest art space and gallery, Off the High Street, we welcome this exhibition of contemporary work inspired by local architecture and the artist’s interest in the relationship between buildings and their usage.

The artist will be exhibiting drawings, sculpture and video, as the outcome of a project which began with his exploration of one of Paisley’s historic buildings, the unoccupied interior of the former Baptist church hall on Walker Street in the town’s west end.

A recipient of major art awards, Ally has exhibited nationally and internationally and undertaken numerous public commissions. Over years he has developed his work in drawing, sculpture, video and installation, and his work often deals with architectural subject matter. The Baptist church hall, a Category C Listed building (constructed circa 1900) is impressive, from an architectural viewpoint, but it is the unoccupied interior of the building that attracted the artist to make it the subject of his work. With the owner’s permission, facilitated by Renfrewshire artist and Walker street resident Philippa Jeffery, the artist spent days sketching and filming in and around the building but focussed his attention mainly on the interior – exploring the strange, uninhabited spaces filled with remnants of the previous tenants, who included a chiropodist, funeral director and auction house.

Exhibition runs 20th – 30th November 2024.
Exhibition opening: Wednesday-Saturday, 11am-5.30pm The artist will be on site during opening hours.
